Telangana Government Drops Move To Acquire Land After Farmers Protests

The Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA) had earlier issued a notification to take land from farmers through land pooling.

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has cancelled the land pooling process to develop the Outer Ring Road (ORR) in Warangal, following farmer protests. This step by the government came amid the growing protests by the farmers against the proposal to acquire land in 28 villages around Warangal, Hanmakonda and Jangoan districts for the construction of the Outer Ring Road in Warangal.

The Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA) had earlier issued a notification to acquire land from farmers through land pooling. However, farmers from the said three districts have staged large-scale protests for the past five months, demanding the repeal of GO 80A, which brought landlords' consent for pooling land.

Farmers have been rallying against the notification given by the state government. To fight land acquisition, they have organised a Joint Action Committee. Last Thursday, the protesters staged a road blockade on the Warangal-Hyderabad route, causing traffic congestion for a few hours. The Congress, Left parties, and the BJP all have backed the protest.

As the protests intensified, TRS MLA from Wardhannapet Aroori Ramesh briefed Minister KT Rama Rao in Hyderabad on the situation on Monday. Responding to this, KTR directed Arvind Kumar, Special Chief Secretary, to stop the land pooling process.

Arvind Kumar directed the Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA) to withdraw forthwith the notification issued on April 30 seeking the consent of landowners for land pooling.
