The animal showed frequent appetite loss, changed diet patterns, and became lean in the backside.

A 10-year-old male Royal Bengal tiger died at Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad on Wednesday. The zoo curator said the big cat named 'Joe' succumbed in its enclosure at 3 am due to renal failure, IANS reported.

In a note, the zoo curator informed that the tiger was under treatment for the last six months and the post-mortem examination revealed that Joe died of renal failure. Joe was born to Aparna and Nikhil in the zoo.

The tiger was suffering from loss of appetite and dyspepsia. The animal showed frequent appetite loss, changed diet patterns, and became lean in the backside.

"With profound grief and sorrow, it is informed that despite expert treatment and all efforts the animal died on 05.04.2023 at 03.00 am in the enclosure due to renal failure as confirmed in post mortem," the zoo said in a statement.

This is the second major loss for the Nehru Zoological Park Zoo in less than a month. A 15-year-old male cheetah named Abdullah, gifted by Saudi Prince Bandar Bin Saud Bin Mohammed Al Saud, a decade ago, died of a cardiac arrest on March 25.

During his visit to the zoo on the occasion of 11th Conference of the Parties (CoP) to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) held in Hyderabad, the Saudi Prince had announced gifting two pairs of cheetahs and African lions.

The zoo had received the animals from the National Wildlife Research Centre of Saudi Arabia in 2013. The female Cheetah died in 2020 and since then the male cheetah, named 'Abdullah', was alone.

The female cheetah 'Hiba' passed away at the age of eight. She was identified as having paraplegia, a type of paralysis characterised by impairment of the sensory function of the lower extremities.
