Meta To Shed Light On How It Will Use Personal Data Of Brazilians To Train Its Gen-AI Model

The Brazilian data protection watchdog, in a statement, said that users will be able to reject the use of their data by Meta to train its generative AI.

Millions of Meta users often wonder how the social media group uses their data. Concerns have always arisen about data security and privacy. Now it seems like Meta is here to shed some light on that longstanding issue. Meta is going to inform Brazilians how it plans to use their personal data to train its generative artificial intelligence (AI). Meta on Tuesday made this announcement on the heel of the demands from Brazil's data protection watchdog.

The Brazilian data protection watchdog, in a statement, said that Meta users in the nation will now receive warnings via email and notifications on Facebook and Instagram. It added that the users will be able to reject the use of their data by Meta to train its generative AI.

Brazil V. Meta

In July, Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) initially halted Meta's new privacy policy, which involved using personal data to train artificial intelligence models. However, this suspension was lifted last Friday after Meta agreed to provide the required disclosures regarding their data usage.

Additionally, in July, Meta took the step of suspending the use of its generative AI tools in Brazil. This included tools for creating popular AI-generated stickers on WhatsApp, a platform where Brazil holds the position as the second-largest user base. Meta’s decision to suspend these tools was made during ongoing discussions with the ANPD, aimed at addressing the authority’s concerns about the implementation and use of generative AI technology.

When questioned by Reuters on Tuesday about the potential resumption of these tools now that the ANPD’s suspension has been lifted, Meta responded by emphasising that the suspension had been a temporary measure while negotiations with the ANPD were in progress.
