Samsung Launches 200MP Camera Sensor Ahead Of The Launch Of Galaxy S23 Ultra

Samsung Electronics on Tuesday introduced its latest 200MP image sensor, the ISOCELL HP2, which comes with improved pixel technology.

Samsung Electronics on Tuesday introduced its latest 200MP image sensor, the ISOCELL HP2, which comes with improved pixel technology that claims to produce stunning images for future premium smartphones and lets handset makers integrate better imaging capabilities without increasing the camera bump. Samsung has announced its latest image sensor ahead of the launch of the flagship Galaxy S23 lineup.

The Samsung ISOCELL HP2 sensor has entered mass production and the sensor is likely to debut with the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

It should be noted that the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ was recently unveiled with a 200MP camera too that utilises Samsung's ISOCELL HPX sensor.

Samsung's ISOCELL HP2 packs 200 million 0.6-micrometer (μm) pixels in a 1/1.3-inch optical format, a sensor size that is widely used in 108MP main smartphone cameras.

With the advanced pixel-binning technology, Tetra2pixel, the ISOCELL HP2 simulates different pixel sizes to accommodate varying lighting levels. For example, in low-lit environments, the sensor transforms either into a 1.2μm 50MP or 2.4μm 12.5MP image sensor by binding 4-16 neighbouring pixels. For fuller 8K video, approximately at 33MP, the HP2 switches to 1.2μm 50MP mode to minimise cropping and capture more of the scene.

"The Samsung ISOCELL HP2 harnesses Samsung's high-resolution image sensor technologies and know-how at the cutting edge for epic details," JoonSeo Yim, Executive Vice President of Sensor Business at Samsung Electronics, said in a statement.

"Our leadership comes from innovative pixel technologies that allow our sensors to go beyond the number and size of pixels. We will continue to open new horizons and solidify our presence in the expanding ultra-high-resolution sensor market."

Last week, Samsung announced it will host its first Galaxy Unpacked event in three years. The South Korean tech giant sent out media invites for the flagship event, also its first in-person event in three years since the coronavirus pandemic, that will take place on February 1 in San Fransisco. Samsung will also live-stream the launch of the Galaxy S23 line on its official YouTube channel, Samsung Newsroom, Samsung.com and Samsung India’s YouTube channel.
