Qualcomm Snapdragon's New Chip For Wearables Teased: Know Everything

Chip-making giant Qualcomm is working to introduce a new wearable SoC as the company has posted a new teaser from its Twitter handle.

Chip-making giant Qualcomm is working to introduce a new wearable SoC as the company has posted a new teaser from its Twitter handle. Qualcomm Snapdragon's tweet drops a teaser of the next-gen wearable chipset it is working on.

"The clock is ticking on something big. 👀⌚," Snapdragon tweeted late on Tuesday night.

The cryptic short video teased by Qualcomm does not reveal much about the upcoming SoC for wearables, including the model or name. The tweet reads: the clock is ticking on something big which indicates that the launch may happen soon. There is a smartwatch emoji and a pair of eyes emoji at the end of the tweet.

Taking Qualcomm's past nomenclature, the upcoming SoC is likely to be the Snapdragon 5100. According to previous leaks and rumours, Qualcomm is likely to launch Snapdragon 5100+ along with the Snapdragon 5100 SoC. The current-gen Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 4100+ chipset is built on the 12nm process and included a new co-processor to help handle more background tasks such as sound and sensor input.

It should be noted that Snapdragon 4100+ introduced performance and battery improvements over the predecessor Snapdragon Wear 3100 chipset. The AON co-processor in Snapdragon 4100+ supports up to 64K colours and includes continuous heart rate monitoring, faster tilt-to-wake responsiveness, steps, alarms, timers and haptics.

Meanwhile, the San Diego, California-headquartered company was among Samsung Electronics' top five clients in the first quarter, largely due to chip contract manufacturing, said a recent report. In a quarterly corporate filing, the South Korean tech giant named Apple, Best Buy, Deutsche Telekom, Qualcomm and Supreme Electronics as its five biggest clients. Combined, they accounted for 14 per cent of Samsung's total sales.
