Huawei Might Be In Works To Make A New Smartwatch With In-Display Fingerprint Scanner

Huawei might be exploring the integration of an optical fingerprint sensor into its smartwatch displays.

Huawei made a significant impact in the smartwatch market last year with the launch of the Watch GT 5 and GT 5 Pro, securing the top position in global wrist-worn wearable shipments. Now, the company seems to be working on a new innovation for its upcoming smartwatches.

According to a recent patent filing spotted by MySmartPrice, Huawei is exploring the integration of an optical fingerprint sensor into its smartwatch displays. This technology could allow the entire screen to function as a fingerprint scanner, similar to what is seen in many Android smartphones. Additionally, the patent suggests that the sensor may support multiple gestures and fingerprint inputs, potentially enhancing security and usability.

3D Fingerprint Scanner To Recognise Multiple Gestures?

The patent images shared by the publication suggest that Huawei’s fingerprint scanner could capture a 360-degree imprint, allowing for a variety of functions based on different finger placements. The 3D fingerprint sensor is reportedly capable of recognizing multiple gestures, enabling users to assign specific actions to each finger.

For instance, the thumb could be used for a back gesture, the index finger for making calls, and the middle finger for closing applications. Additionally, the sensor might allow users to adjust volume and screen brightness through gestures, such as twisting a finger clockwise or counterclockwise to increase or decrease levels.

As of now, Huawei has not officially confirmed plans to introduce in-display fingerprint sensors in its smartwatches. The patented technology could still be in the testing phase, and its final implementation may differ. However, if this feature makes its way into future Huawei wearables, it could significantly enhance both security and user convenience.
