Huawei May Return To 5G Smartphone Market With New Mate Series, Overcome US Sanctions

The US had imposed sanctions on Chinese firms since 2019 and the Joe Biden administration is looking to cut off Huawei from all American suppliers such as chip-making giants Intel and Qualcomm.

Chinese tech behemoth Huawei may be looking to return to the 5G smartphone industry by the end of 2023, says a report by news agency Reuters. The US and Europe have deemed that Huawei poses a threat to their national security, which the company has denied. The US had imposed sanctions on Chinese firms since 2019 and the Joe Biden administration is looking to cut off Huawei from all American suppliers such as chip-making giants Intel and Qualcomm.

The smartphone giant is in the process of procuring 5G chips locally using its own advances in semiconductor design tools along with chipset-making firm Semiconductor Manufacturing International Co (SMIC), three third-party technology research firms covering China's smartphone sector were quoted saying by Reuters.

According to a report by Global Times, Huawei is also looking to launch its flagship Mate series of smartphones. It is being said that the launch of the Huawei Mate 60 series could be around the corner as its supply chain has started production, the report added, citing China Securities Journal.

Huawei is likely to release dual-flagship devices in the Mate 60 series which is said to be a signal of the return of the tech giant. The company released the Huawei Mate 50 last year and the Huawei P60 this spring. Huawei's return to the 5G handset market would mark a victory for the company that for almost three years said it was in "survival mode". Despite US sanctions imposed in 2019, Huawei's consumer business revenue reported 483 billion yuan ($67 billion) growth in 2020 and declined almost 50 per cent in 2021.
