Apple Pulls The Plug On Weather App Dark Sky. Everything You Should Know

Apple has shut down its popular weather app Dark Sky, which it acquired in April 2020. The Dark Sky API and website will continue to function until March 31st of this year. Currently, the app has stopped functioning for all of its users. Apple had incorporated most of its features into the pre-installed Weather app on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Dark Sky's forecast technology is now enhanced and integrated into the all-new Apple Weather forecast. While announcing the removal of the Dark Sky weather app from the Apple Store, the company said, "Developers, Apple’s new WeatherKit API lets you incorporate Apple Weather forecast data into your app and is available for iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, and web."

To recall, in an official blog post, Dark Sky said in June last year that its app will no longer be available beginning on December 31, 2022. Apple will shut down Dark Sky's API for third-party weather apps on March 31 this year.

While introducing WeatherKit, Apple said, "WeatherKit brings valuable weather information to your apps and services through a wide range of data that can help people stay up to date, safe, and prepared. It’s easy to use WeatherKit in your apps for iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13, tvOS 16, and watchOS 9 with a platform-specific Swift API, and on any other platform with a REST API."

It also said that WeatherKit is powered by the all-new Apple Weather service, a state-of-the-art global weather forecast that provides all of the data users need to power their app with timely, hyperlocal weather information. It also ensures the availability of information on the current weather conditions and 10-day hourly forecasts for temperature, precipitation, wind, UV Index, and more. Not just that, users can also take advantage of minute-by-minute precipitation for the next hour, and severe weather alerts are available for select regions.
