GM Plans To Introduce ChatGPT-Like Digital Assistant In Its Cars: Here's What It Can Do

GM's AI bot will have a more car-focussed layer on top of OpenAI's ChatGPT model.

Ever since ChatGPT was released as a prototype by Microsoft-backed research lab OpenAI, the chatbot has been leveraged by individual users and institutions alike to take care of tasks ranging from writing high school essays to generating complex codes for programmers. Several companies, including the likes of Google and Microsoft, have already jumped onto the AI bandwagon to offer chatbot integration on its products and services. Now, General Motors (GM), the Detroit-headquartered automaker, is reportedly working on a virtual personal assistant based on the same machine learning models that power ChatGPT.

Designed to be operated via voice commands, GM's chatbot will be powered by Azure, the Microsoft-owned cloud service, as per a report by Semafor. However, the tool is expected to go beyond just voice commands, as per Scott Miller, the vice president of GM's Software Defined Vehicle and Operating System division. He said that the chatbot might help drivers learn handy tasks, like changing a flat tyre.

The report added that GM's AI bot will have a more car-focussed layer on top of OpenAI's model, which will be designed to address the concerns of the driver better.

Meanwhile, GM, just like most other companies lately, has laid off hundreds of workers as it follows other major companies, including rivals, in downsizing headcounts to cut costs and drive profits. The cuts reportedly affected nearly 500 positions across the company's various functions.

As mentioned earlier, ChatGPT has already been integrated by several companies, including homegrown microblogging platform, Koo. Its new ChatGPT tool will enable creators and users of the platform to write and posts texts on the platform using ChatGPT.

However, the new feature is only available for 'Verified' and 'Influential' personalities currently. Koo said the new feature will be rolled out to all users soon in the near future.

The company said, “The generative AI feature will provide multiple use cases for creators such as finding the top news of the day or asking for a quote from a well-known personality or even asking for the post or a blog to be written on a particular theme all within the draft section.”
