Thanjavur Chariot Electrocution: PM Modi Expresses Grief, Announces Rs 2 Lakh Ex Gratia To Kin Of Deceased

Thanjavur Chariot Electrocution: Along with PM Modi, President Ramnath Kovind also expressed his condolences on Wednesday.

Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences to the victims of Thanjavur chariot electrocution and announced Rs 2 lakh ex gratia from PM National Relief Fund (NRF) to the next of kin of the deceased on Wednesday. The PM also announced Rs 50,000 to those who suffered injuries.

In Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district, 11 people were electrocuted after a temple car (chariot) came in contact with an overhead livewire during a procession from Appar Swami temple after Chithirai festivities on Tuesday. In the mishap, 15 other people also suffered injuries.

In a tweet, PM Modi said, “Deeply pained by the mishap in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. I hope that the injured recover soon.”

“The Centre would give Rs. 2 lakh each from PMNRF to the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to the mishap in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000,” he said.

President Ramnath Kovind said, “The loss of life, including that of children, due to electrocution in a procession in Thanjavur is a tragedy beyond words. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.


Earlier, Tamil Nadu CM Stalin announced Rs 5 lakh ex gratia to the next kin of the deceased. The CM also expressed his condolences in Tamil Nadu Assembly. Stalin is also set to fly to Tiruchy at 11.30 Am from Chennai and then visit the mishap site in Thanjavur by traveling on road.
