Tamil Nadu: Three More Students Test Positive For Covid After Schools Reopen

The students are 14 years old and are studying class IX in government high school at Sulthanpet in Coimbatore district.

Chennai: Almost a week after schools were reopened for class IX to XII students in Tamil Nadu, three students from a government high school near Sulur in Coimbatore district tested positive for Covid-19 infection on Monday. 

According to a report in The Hindu, the 14-year-old boys are studying class IX in a government high school, Sultanpet. As a part of the random sample collection exercise, a medical team from Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) school healthcare initiative collected swab samples from about 30 students studying in classes IX and X in the school. 

Quoting an unidentified health official, the report said that the students were asymptomatic and were admitted to a government medical college and ESI hospital in Coimbatore for observation. Local body disinfected the school premises on Monday and the health department would be collecting swab samples of teachers and parents of the affected students for Covid-19 test at the earliest, the official added.

Coimbatore’s chief educational officer N Geetha, according to the report, said that the school would remain closed for three days till Wednesday for disinfection and the school teachers were directed to call up the students to check whether the students or their parents have any symptoms. 

A couple of days ago, two students and a teacher-tested positive for the Covid-19 infection in the state. While a 16-year-old student was from Government-aided higher secondary school in Ariyalur, another 19-year-old student was from Kundhavai Natchiyar government arts college for women in Thanjavur. The teacher who tested positive for the infection was from Nesavalar colony municipal high school in Tirupur.
