Tamil Nadu: Schoolgirl Dead, 42 Hospitalised After Eating Shawarma At Namakkal Restaurant

Namakkal SP said that three persons including the restaurant owner have been arrested under various sections of IPC.

Namakkal district temporarily banned the consumption of shawarma and grilled chicken after a 14-year-old girl died on Monday. Along with the girl, 43 other people who consumed shawarma and other food items from the same eatery over the weekend were also hospitalised. The FSSAI has been ordered to conduct inspections at restaurants across the district. 

According to The New Indian Express, a 14-year-old girl died of suspected food poisoning after consuming shawarma from an eatery near Paramathi Velur in Namakkal district. The girl who consumed food from the eatery on Saturday died on Monday. 

The girl has been identified as T Kalaiarasi (14). The school student visited the hotel along with her parents, brother and relatives on Saturday. The family consumed fried rice, shawarma and grilled meat. However, as soon as they got back home, Kalai started vomiting and got a fever, diarrhea and dizziness. 

She was taken to a private hospital where doctors treated her and sent her back home. However, Kalaiarasi's relatives found her dead at home on Monday.

Talking to the media, Collector Uma said that 43 people who had food from the eatery on Friday and Saturday suffered from health issues. 

Of the 200 people who consumed food on Saturday and Sunday, 43 people were found to be affected including a pregnant woman. The Collector said that initially they were alerted that 11 students of Namakkal Medical College Hospital who consumed food at the same hotel were hospitalised on Saturday. 

On Monday, when officials learned about Kalai's demise and visited her house, all her family members had low pulse and BP. 

They were later admitted to Namakkal Medical College Hospital.
