Days After Row, Tamil Nadu Assembly Again Clears 10 Bills Sent Back By Governor RN Ravi

Around 10 Bills were readopted and passed without any amendments in Tamil Nadu Assembly's special session on Saturday.

Tamil Nadu government readopted the 10 Bills returned by Governor RN Ravi on Thursday without any amendments during a special Assembly session convened by the state on Saturday. RN Ravi on Thursday returned 10 bills that were submitted to him by the government for approval. Hence, the state Assembly was convened to reintroduce and pass these bills in a special session on Saturday (November 18).

The Assembly session started with Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin moving a special resolution expressing the State Assembly's displeasure of the House about Governor RN Ravi withholding assent to 10 Bills adopted by the State Assembly.

Tamil Nadu Speaker Appavu said, "The Bills will be passed and will be resent to Governor RN Ravi."

The House readopted the Bills after discussion through a voice vote. However, BJP MLAs staged a walkout opposing the move before the vote. AIADMK also walked out in connection with the arrest related to Cheyyar SIPCOT protest.

On Thursday, RN Ravi returned 10 Bills that were pending his assent days after Tamil Nadu moved Supreme Court seeking a deadline to decide on the Bills passed by the Assembly.

The DMK government has recently taken its grievances to the Supreme Court, alleging that the Raj Bhavan has been withholding approval for bills passed by the Assembly. A total of 12 bills, in addition to 4 official orders and a file pertaining to the premature release of 54 prisoners, reportedly were pending.

On November 10, the Supreme Court expressed serious concern over the alleged delay by Governor Ravi and requested the Centre's response to the state government's petition, which accused the Raj Bhavan of neglecting to act on the 12 bills in question.

The Assembly, which adjourned sine die in October, convened on Saturday to readopt the returned Bills.
