On July 18, Minister Senthil Balaji’s wife Megala moved Supreme Court challenging the Madras High Court's order upholding Enforcement Directorate‘s right to take Senthil Balaji into custody.

The Supreme Court is set to hear the pleas of TN Minister V Senthil Balaji, his wife against Madras High Court order upholding his arrest in Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA) case on Friday.

“If the bench seeks to list it tomorrow then I have no problem,” the law officer said, as per PTI.

“We will list if for hearing,” the bench said.

A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, justices P S Narasimha and Manoj Misra took note of senior advocate Kapil Sibal's arguments that the issue would become infructuous if it wasn't heard right away. Sibal was representing the minister and his spouse.

In opposition to Sibal's requests for an urgent hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who was representing the anti-money laundering investigation agency, said that incorrect facts had been stated and that the Chief Justice of the High Court had yet to submit the case to a division bench for further action.

On July 18, Minister Senthil Balaji’s wife Megala moved Supreme Court challenging the Madras High Court's order upholding Enforcement Directorate‘s right to take Senthil Balaji into custody. The Madras High Court recently held legal the ED’s arrest of Balaji in connection with the money laundering case.

Earlier, Madras High Court pronounced an order on the habeas corpus petition filed by Megala, wife of Senthil Balaji.

After a division bench's divided decision, Justice C V Karthikeyan was appointed by the high court as a third judge to hear Senthil Balaji's wife's habeas corpus petition. He agreed with Justice D Bharatha Chakravarthy's findings. Balaji's arrest had been upheld by Justice Chakravarthy.

Meanwhile, Balaji was shifted to the Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai from a private hospital on Monday. Balaji was arrested by ED and lodged in prison in connection with a cash-for-job scam. The scam allegedly took place in the previous AIADMK government when Balaji served as the then Minister of Transport.
