Last COVID-19 Patient Gets Discharged From RGGGH

A 47-year-old woman, the last COVID-19 patient, was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday.

Chennai: For the first time since the pandemic, all the 2050 beds in COVID-19 ward of Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai were empty. This is the first time after the first patient from Kancheepuram tested positive for the virus on March 7, 2020 the COVID-19 wards are empty. 

According to a report on Times of India, a 47-year-old woman, the last COVID-19 patient, was discharged from the hospital. 

E Theranirajan, Dean of Madras Medical College said, "First time we have 0 patients at RGGH my heartfelt thanks to everyone to reach this milestone."

In the last two years, the hospital handled over 65,000 COVID-19 patients including those who needed ICU care. 

The hospital saw the maximum number of 2,090 in-patients per day during the second COVID-19 wave in May 2021.

On Tuesday, the hospital's covid ward was used as an out-patient ward and the staff was seen clearing the excessive beds and cots from the wards, said the report.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the state reported 22 new active COVID-19 cases. Of the total, Chennai reported nine cases, Chengalpattu reported six cases, Coimbatore, Kancheepuram, Karur, Ranipet, Theni and Tiruppur districts reported one case each.

The state also witnessed 25 patients getting discharged from the hospital after treatment. The state also reported zero deaths.

In a release, Health Minister Ma Subramanian appreciated the efforts of doctors, nurses technicians, pharmacists and everyone who toiled to reach their milestone.
