IMD Predicts Light To Moderate Rainfall In Chennai, Interior Tamil Nadu For Next 2 Days

The unseasonal rainfall is due to the formation of a trough extending to south peninsular India.

As a much-needed respite from the scorching sun, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted light to moderate rainfall for at least next 2 days in places including Nilgiris, Erode, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Theni, Tenkasi, Chennai and Tirunelveli districts due to the formation of a trough. The IMD said that a trough was seen from Maldives area to Maharashtra across Southeast Arabian Sea and Coastal Karnataka.

In a press release, Senthamarai Kannan, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, RMC Chennai said, "Yesterday’s trough/wind discontinuity from west Vidarbha to north Tamilnadu now seen as a trough from Maldives area to Madhya Maharashtra across Southeast Arabian Sea & Coastal Karnataka at 0.9 km above mean sea level."

As a result, IMD predicted cloudy skies and moderate rainfall in Chennai. IMD said, "Sky condition is likely to be partly cloudy. Thunderstorm & lightning with light/moderate rain is likely to occur in some areas. Maximum temperature is likely to be around 36-37 °C and minimum temperature is likely to be around 27-28 °C."

To the remaining places, IMD said, “Light to moderate rain at a few places with thunderstorm and lightning with gusty winds, speed reaching upto 30-40 Kmph at isolated places is likely to occur over Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area.”

Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Nilgiris, Erode, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Theni, Tenkasi and Tirunelveli districts of Tamilnadu, it added.

The weather bloggers too predicted active spell of rainfall in interior Tamil Nadu and Chennai. An independent weather blogger, COMK said, "As the first signs of #Monsoon dynamics shows up a #Weather interlude is likely to bring active spell of #Thunderstorms and #Rains for Interior #TamilNadu this week with #Chennai and suburbs also in line to get a spell or two of rains."
