Cyclone Mandous: A red alert is already issued in Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Villupuram districts of Tamil Nadu.
Chennai: Tamil Nadu government has declared a rain holiday for schools and colleges in districts including Chennai, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur and Vellore on December 9 in view of cyclone Mandous.
According to ANI, “In view of continuous rain across the state, a holiday has been announced for schools and colleges in Chennai, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur and Vellore on December 9.”

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall as Cyclone Mandous was over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and 500 km southeast of Karaikkal.
The IMD bulletin on Thursday afternoon said that the cyclonic storm is expected to move west-northwest and cross north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry with a wind speed of 70 kmph around December 9 (Friday) midnight.
A red alert is already issued in Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Villupuram districts of Tamil Nadu and an Orange alert issued for Cuddalore, Myladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Pudukottai districts on December 8.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are kept ready in all district collectorates to face any eventuality.

The IMD said, "Light to moderate rain is likely to occur at most places over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal area. Heavy to very heavy rain at a few places with extremely heavy rain at one or two places is likely to occur over Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Villupuram districts of Tamilnadu and Puducherry."
"Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tiruvallur, Chennai, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi and Cuddalore districts of Tamilnadu. Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Karur, Dindigul, Madurai and Sivaganga districts of Tamilnadu and Karaikal," the IMD said.
