Coimbatore Temple Decorates Deity With Cash, Jewels Worth Rs 6 Crore On Tamil New Year

Coimbatore's Kattoor Ambika Muthu Mariamman temple decorated the deity Mariamman with jewels and currency worth Rs 6 crore on the occasion of Tamil New Year on Friday. The idol was decorated with jewels worth 3 crore and cash worth Rs 3 crore, overall totaling to Rs 6 crore.
The deity Kattoor Ambika Muthu Mariamman was decorated with currency notes of 100, 200, 500, 2000 rupee denominations to mark Tamil New Year on Friday. Following the decoration, the devotees beelined in front of the temple.
On Friday, the people of Tamil Nadu observed Tamil New Year with prayers and rituals. As per the beliefs of the Tamil community, on the Tamil New Year day of Chithirai Thirunal, they should wake up before money, fruits and jewels, said a report on IANS.
The people also visited temples and conducted poojas by making a multi-course meal at their homes to mark the occasion.
In Coimbatore, people also thronged Arulmigu Subramaniaswamy Temple in Maruthamalai due to which traffic congestion was reported in the vicinity. At Mundhi Vinayagar Temple in Puliakulam, the Vinayagar diety was decorated with fruits weighing hundreds of kilograms.
The people also visited plague Mariamman Temple at TK Market, Pateswarar Temple at Perur and Vanabathrakali Amman Temple at Mettupalayam on Friday, as per a report on Times of India.
Meanwhile, during demonetization, a temple in Coimbatore decorated Goddess Makaliamman with Rs 2,000 notes for New Year 2017 while the whole country was facing a cash crunch.
“This year, there is a huge shortage of bank notes but still we have decorated the temple. And, the purpose of doing so is to pray to god that this type of cash shortage never happens again,” said Krishnamoorthy, the temple priest in 2017, as per a report on Indian Express.
