Cauvery Dispute: Supreme Court Refuses To Pass Order On TN's Plea To Release 24,000 Cusecs Of Water

The Apex Court instructed Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) to make a decision regarding the water release for the upcoming two weeks at its meeting on August 28.

The Supreme Court refused to pass an order on Tamil Nadu's plea to release 24,000 cusecs of Cauvery water on Friday. The Apex Court said it does not possess expertise on matter. The Court also told the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) to decide on the release of water for the next two weeks during the meeting to be held on August 28.

The Supreme Court said that it does not possess any expertise on the issue. It then told the Cauvery Water Management Authority to submit a report on the matter, reported Economic Times.

The Court then listed the matter to September 1.

Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have been at loggerheads with each other over the sharing of Cauvery River water for a long time now.

On the Cauvery water dispute, BJP MP Tejaswi Surya told ANI, "It is unfortunate that the Karnataka CM is politicking such a matter as grave & as serious as the Cauvery water issue. Not only are lakhs of farmers in the Cauvery basin in Karnataka dependent on the water, but almost a crore of people in Bengaluru are dependent on the Cauvery water for drinking water purposes."

"The primary responsibility for ensuring parity & justice for the state before the Cauvery Water Management Authority as well as the SC lies primarily before the state government. Over the last few weeks, the state government was caught napping while the Tamil Nadu government moved the Cauvery Water Management Authority & got an order to release 15 cusecs of water. What was the state government doing then?..." he asked.
