The primary deity worshipped is Goddess Bannari, revered as the goddess of rain and an incarnation of Goddess Shakti. Goddess Bannari holds immense significance in Tamil and Kannada folklore with Mariamman temples dedicated to the goddess' presence in almost every village across Kongu region of Tamil Nadu.
The Kundam Festival takes place during Tamil month of Panguni, falling between March and April. During this time, hundreds of thousands of devotees flock to the temple from various directions. Devotees from Karnataka also throng during the festivities.
Erode district also observes a local holiday to mark this auspicious occasion.
During the Bannari Kundam festival in March 2018, a large gathering of devotees congregated in Erode district. Temple priests led the procession by walking on a charcoal bed, followed by devotees. However, the festivities took a tragic turn when over 300 devotees sustained burn injuries after stumbling on the fire bed.
Emergency services were rushed to the spot and the injured were taken to the government hospital in Sathyamangalam for treatment.
