'Commission, Alcohol Supply To Students, Mafia': RG Kar Ex-Official Reveals 'Dark Secrets' Of Former Principal

Who is Sandip Ghosh? Former principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital Sandip Ghosh has been accused of corruption and running a mafia within the institution, by an ex-official.

Kolkata Doctor Death: Sandip Ghosh, the controversial former principal of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, was an "extremely corrupt man", a former senior official of the facility has claimed. Akhtar Ali, ex-deputy superintendent of RG Kar MCH, alleged that Sandip Ghosh used to run a mafia within the institution.

Sandip Ghosh has been in the news since the rape and murder of a junior doctor on the RG Kar MCH premises last week. He had to resign from his post. Ghosh has had a controversial past before his resignation. He was transferred twice in the past from RG Kar Medical College & Hospital but was reinstated, purportedly after he flexed his influence.

"He [Sandip Ghosh] is a very corrupt person. He used to fail students, he used to avail 20% commission on tender orders... He used to take money for every work that was done at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. He used to supply alcohol to students at his guesthouse... He was like a mafia person," Akhtar Ali said.

Ali further claimed that Sandip Ghosh used to roam around with a big security team as he was very powerful... "I complained against him in 2023... his resignation [after the rape and murder] was an eyewash. He was appointed the principal of Calcutta National Medical College [CNMC] within 8 hours," Ali said.

Sandip Ghosh's Controversial Stint At RG Kar

Sandip Ghosh was moved to RG Kar MCH as its principal in 2021. Before that, he served as the vice-principal of CNMC. As Sandip Ghosh began his stint, he faced protests from students, including a hunger strike, over his decision to appoint two separate councils for students and the hostel.

In January last year, Sandip Ghosh and his administration faced massive backlash after it was alleged that corpses brought to RG Kar MCH for post-mortem examination were being redirected for the "practical sessions on dissection" without the consent of the families of the deceased.

In May 2023, Sandip Ghosh received his first transfer order. However, he allegedly refused to vacate his office and locked it from outside. His replacement, Dr Sanath Ghosh, had to turn away and Ghosh's transfer order was revoked within 24 hours.

In October 2023, he was again transferred — this time to Murshidabad Medical College. He was allegedly facing corruption allegations at the time. However, this transfer, too, was revoked within three months after some students protested against his transfer. His replacement Dr Manas Banerjee faced protests from students on his way to the college.

BJP leader Amit Malviya alleged: "Sandip Ghosh, Principal of RG Kar MCH, was transferred to Murshidabad in Oct 2023, for his involvement in a scam. But he was brought back within 3 months, given his proximity to the TMC. BJP Bengal President Dr Sukanta Majumdar also wrote a letter to ED demanding investigation against him."

Media reports from that time, quoting doctors, and Akhtar Ali's statements corroborated this as they alleged that student lobbies were manufactured to increase his influence.
