New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath confirmed he will be contesting assembly elections for the first time. However, the constituency he will contest is not yet decided.

“I will fight the election from wherever the party says,” said CM Yogi on Saturday amid the speculations of him contesting from Ayodhya, Mathura, or his home constituency Gorakhpur, reported news agency PTI.

Yogi Adityanath is a member of the Legislative Council of UP and will be fighting assembly elections for the first time.

Yogi was speaking to the media in Lucknow where he tried to address the concerns of many sitting MLAs about getting a ticket by saying BJP is a “very big family” and people's role in it may change with time.

“Every person's role is different at different times. It is not necessary that one person should always be in the government, sometimes he can also do the work of the organisation,” he added.

Yogi also targeted the opposition on the question of what changed from the 2017 election saying, “In 2017 we fought on the failures of the state government. This time we are contesting on the basis of our achievements.”

Taking a jibe on Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s promise of 300 units of free electricity, he said everyone knows that “only five districts used to get power supply before 2017.”

Earlier in the day SP chief Akhilesh Yadav had announced the free units as a new year gift to the state if they form the government. “2022 will be a new year with new light for a new Uttar Pradesh. Three hundred units of electricity for households (domestic consumers) will be given free and electricity for irrigation will be free,” Yadav tweeted.
