Mathura: Police Informs No Untoward Incident Reported, 10 Arrested For Disrupting Peace

Mathura News: The situation in Mathura had become tense after a right-wing group had threatened to perform a “maha jalabhishek” and install a Lord Krishna idol inside the Shahi Idgah mosque on December 6. However, no untoward incident was reported in the city till Monday. The police had tightened the security across the city in the purview of the threat by the group on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya.

What Led To Tensions

Rajyashree Choudhury, the National President of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha had held a press conference last month. She announced a ‘jalabhishek’ and installation of the Lord Krishna idol in the Shahi Idgah mosque on December 6. 

The Shahi Idgah mosque was built during the reign of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and shares the land with Krishna Janmabhumi temple. Since the announcement, the situation in Mathura has been heated up. However, the organization withdrew the call later. Yet the security arrangements were tight across the city.

Action Taken On 10 People

District Collector Navneet Singh Chahal said that in view of the situation, permission to hold a meeting at Ramleela Maidan was also withdrawn and prohibitory orders were imposed in Mathura. All the organizations were warned that strict action would be taken if anyone tried to conduct any event or enter the restricted area around the Krishna Janmabhumi temple or Shahi Idgah mosque.

Senior Superintendent of Police Dr Gaurav Grover said efforts are being made to ensure peace and tranquillity in the city. Action has been taken against five persons for posting misleading and provocative posts on social media till Monday evening. He added that action has been taken against another five for attempting to disturb peace in front of the main gate of Krishna Janmabhumi temple on Monday.

Chants Of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ 

Amidst the whole commotion, the police arrested five persons who were trying to create unrest by shouting slogans of 'Jai Shri Ram' in front of the main gate of Krishna Janmabhumi. SP City Martand Prakash Singh said on Monday, that they reached the main gate of Krishna janmabhumi for worship, and started chanting slogans of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ instead of going into the temple. He said that they were immediately taken into custody as it might have disrupted the peace in the city. He added that the accused are from Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Mathura and legal action has been initiated against them.
