Kasganj Custodial Death: Opposition Slams UP Administration, Demands High-Level Inquiry

Opposition slams the Uttar Pradesh administration and demands a high-level inquiry in the custodial death of a 22-year-old youth Altaf at Kasganj police station on Tuesday.

New Delhi: Opposition slams the Uttar Pradesh administration and demands a high-level inquiry in the custodial death of a 22-year-old youth, Altaf, at Kasganj police station on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati demanded a high-level inquiry in the case.

“The government should give strict punishment to the culprits by conducting a high-level inquiry into the incident and also help the victim's family,” tweeted the BSP leader.

“It is a matter of great concern that the UP government is proving to be unsuccessful in preventing death in custody and making the police the savior of the public,” she added.

Earlier Congress and Samajwadi Party had also criticised the UP government pointing at the violation of human rights in the state.

“Is there anything called human rights left in Uttar Pradesh?” Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had tweeted on Wednesday.

SP leader Akhilesh Yadav had also tweeted demanding a judicial inquiry in the case for “restoration of trust in the police under the rule of BJP.”

Samajwadi Party’s Twitter handles offered condolences to the victim’s family and ensured financial aid of Rs 5 lakhs.

Altaf was called to Kasganj police station in relation to a kidnapping case on Tuesday and was later found dead. His family has accused the police personnel of killing the youth.

The UP police claimed that Altaf strangled himself with a string of his jacket’s hood in the lock-up washroom. Five police officials have been suspended for negligence.
