UP Man Brings Severed Head Of Her Sister At Barabanki Police Station After Beheading Her, Arrested

A young man was arrested as he walked to the police station carrying the severed head of his sister, whom he allegedly murdered over their relationship.

A shocking incident unfolded in Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki district in Mithwara village, where a man, identified as Riyaz (22), was apprehended by the police while walking to the station with the severed head of his sister, Aashifa (18), news agency PTI reported citing police officials on Friday (July 21). The tragic incident occurred after a heated argument between the siblings over Aashifa's relationship with Chand Babu, a fellow villager. Riyaz allegedly used a sharp weapon to fatally sever his sister's neck, driven by his opposition to her elopement with Babu.

"Riyaz severed the neck of his sister with a sharp weapon and was on his way to the police station with her head when the police arrested him," Additional Superintendent of Police, Ashutosh Mishra was quoted as saying by PTI.

Aashifa had recently fled with Babu, but the police located her shortly after and incarcerated Babu based on a complaint lodged by her family. The local community revealed that Riyaz vehemently opposed his sister's relationship, leading to frequent quarrels between them. Police promptly registered a case, arrested the accused, and commenced the investigation while sending the victim's body for postmortem examination.

"A police team reached the crime spot and sent the body for postmortem after collecting the required evidence", the ASP said. "According to locals, Riyaz was opposed to his sister's relationship and the duo often quarrelled over the issue", the police added.

"A case has been registered and the accused has been arrested," the ASP said.

The number of crimes against women increased from 56.5% in 2020 to 64.5% in 2021, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report (incidents per 1 lakh population). According to the 2022 data, India has seen a total of 4,28,278 cases of crimes against women in 2021, a 15% increase from the previous year.

According to the NCRB, West Bengal had the highest number of cases of cruelty against women by spouses or relatives in 2021. In the state, a total of 19,952 cases were registered under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with violence against women by husbands and their relatives.
