2,200 Jobs, 25,000 Applications: Air India Airport Services Recruitment Drive Creates Stampede-Like Situation In Mumbai — Video

The applicants turned up to try their luck at the 2,216 vacancies for air loaders, and the staff of the airlines was seen struggling to manage the huge crowd.

Chaotic scenes were witnessed in Mumbai’s Kalina after a huge crowd of around 25,000 job seekers turned up for a walk-in interview at Air India Airport Services Ltd. on Tuesday.

The applicants turned up to try their luck at the 2,216 vacancies for airport loaders, according to media reports. The staff of the airlines was seen struggling to manage the huge crowd. Videos of the crowd have surfaced on social media in which applicants were seen jostling with each other to reach the form counters.

According to an NDTV report, job seekers had to wait for hours without food and water, due to which many began to feel unwell. Air India Airport Services held a recruitment drive for airport loaders.

Airport loaders have the task of loading and unloading luggage on aircraft and operating baggage belts and ramp tractors. According to a Hindustan Times report, authorities were forced to intervene amid the rush to avoid any stampede-like situation.

In a notification, Air India said, “AI Airport Services Ltd (formerly known as Air India Air Transport Services Limited) (AIASL) wishes to fill in existing vacancies as per the estimated requirements and maintain a wait-list for vacancies arising in future. Indian Nationals (Male & Female) who meet with the requirements stipulated as mentioned herein, may apply for various posts at Mumbai international airport posts on a Fixed Term Contract basis (3 years) which may be renewed subject to their performance and the requirements of the AI Airport Services Limited. The number of vacancies are indicative and may vary as per the operational requirement,” as per Hindustan Times.

“The reservation will be as per the Presidential Directives. The actual reservation of vacancies would depend upon the prevailing strength at the appointment time,” the notification further stated.

All Happening Due To State Govt's Wrong Schemes: Maharashtra LoP

Speaking on the stampede-like situation that occurred at Kalina airport as thousands turned up for the Air India walk-in interview, Maharashtra LoP Vijay Wadettiwar slammed the NDA government in the state and said that all this is happening due to the wrong schemes of the Eknath Shinde dispensation.

"600 vacancies opened up in Kalina airport, where over 20,000 to 25,000 candidates appeared...shows that the unemployment situation in the country is severe. The youth has taken to the roads in search of jobs. The government is saying that they have created jobs and brought investment...where are the jobs? This all is happening due to the (Maharashtra) government's wrong schemes. No investments are coming in the state," Wadettiwar said.
