Severe Waterlogging, Road Collapse, Uprooted Trees: Heavy Rains Cause Chaos In Gujarat

The IMD forecasts continued heavy rainfall in Valsad and districts of Southern Gujarat due to cyclonic activity off the coast. Light to moderate rains are expected in other parts of the state.

Heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc in various parts of Gujarat, including Surat, Amreli, and Valsad, leading to widespread waterlogging and disruption of daily life. Videos shared by news agency ANI depict the extent of the deluge affecting major cities. An incident of road collapse was reported in the Shela area of Ahmedabad city. In another rain-related incident, a tree was uprooted and fell on two cars damaged amid heavy rainfall in Ahmedabad's KK Nagar.

IMD Scientist Pradeep Sharma, as reported by ANI, warned of persistent rainfall across Gujarat over the next five days. "There will be rains in all parts of Gujarat... A warning for very happy rain is issued for the Gujarat region... Orange alert has been issued for Bharuch, Surat, Navsari, Valsad and Dadra Nagar Haveli," he told ANI.

The IMD forecasts continued heavy rainfall in Valsad and districts of Southern Gujarat due to cyclonic activity off the coast. Meanwhile, light to moderate rains are expected in other parts of the state.

In Surat district's Palsana taluka, the highest rainfall in the state, measuring 153 mm, was recorded within just ten hours, severely impacting normal life. The downpour has led to major waterlogging in Surat, Bhuj, Vapi, Bharuch, and Ahmedabad, causing difficulties in commuting with inundation reported in low-lying areas, including roads and underpasses.

As per the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), 43 talukas received more than 40 mm of rainfall during a ten-hour period from 6 AM to 4 PM on Sunday.

Several talukas reported triple-digit rainfall figures, including Bardoli (135 mm), Surat City (123 mm), Kamrej (120 mm), and Mahuva (119 mm). Vapi in Valsad district received 117 mm, Olpad in Surat recorded 116 mm of rainfall.

In Ahmedabad city, 62 mm of rainfall was recorded during the same period, exacerbating waterlogging issues in various localities.

The IMD attributes the heavy rains to a cyclonic circulation over the northeast Arabian Sea adjoining the Saurashtra region. It predicts heavy rains in isolated places across south and central Gujarat and the Saurashtra region over the next two days. Specifically, Valsad, Navsari in Gujarat, and Banaskantha in north Gujarat are expected to receive major rainfall on July 3 and 4.
