Lalu Prasad, president of the RJD, returned to his home state of Bihar on Friday amid speculation that he would support Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's efforts to forge "opposition unity" in advance of the Lok Sabha elections in 2019. Lalu, whose unconditional offer of help to Kumar, an arch-rival, assisted the latter survive in power while elbowing out previous partner BJP, is back home following a gap of seven months which saw him travel to Singapore for a kidney transplant operation followed by an extensive stretch of recovery in Delhi.

Tejashwi Yadav, his younger son and party's heir apparent who has earned the Deputy CM's chair as a result of the turbulence in Bihar politics last year, was also present.

In the sweltering heat, enthusiastic supporters waited for a glimpse of their leader. It was difficult for security personnel to keep the slogan-shouting crowd from getting too close to the VIPs.

Lalu gestured and waved at party allies as he hurried to his son's car, covered with flower petals. His procession headed to his significant other Rabri Devi's home, where he sets up at whatever point he is in Patna.

Outside Rabri Devi's bungalow at 10, Circular Road, which is directly across the street from the residence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, a large number of vehicles were parked.

There are a lot of rumors that Lalu, who has always enjoyed playing the "kingmaker" role, will assist Kumar in organising a gathering of opposition leaders, as Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, recently suggested to Kumar.

The former Bihar CM, who later additionally served as Railway Minister of the country, greeted visitors as his vehicle headed towards the inner quarters.
