'Important Day For Assam': Centre, State Sign Peace Accord With 8 Adivasi Militant Outfits

The Union Home Minister said that promoting the culture of Assam and the entire North East is one of our main priorities.

New Delhi: The Assam government and representatives of 8 tribal groups on Thursday in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah signed tripartite peace agreement, as reported by news agency ANI. During the meeting, Amit Shah said, "This is an important day for Assam and the North East. Many initiatives have been taken by the Modi govt to develop the North East region. Around 1100 persons of Adivasi outfits of Assam are surrendering arms and joining the mainstream today."

"Around 1,100 people belonging to Adivasi outfits of Assam are surrendering arms and joining the mainstream today,” Shah said.

“We want Assam and the northeast should be drug-free, terrorism-free, dispute-free and fully developed. The Modi government is working towards this,” he added.

The eight organisations include Birsa Commando Force (BCF), Adivasi People's Army (APA), All Adivasi National Liberation Army (ANLA), Adivasi Cobra Military of Assam (ACMA) and Santhali Tiger Force (STF). Along with this, the other three organisations are BCF, ANLA and ACMA.

Peace talks with organisations that started 10 years ago have been signed and formalised today. The Birsa Commando Force, Adivasi People's Army, All Adivasi National Liberation Army, Assam's Adivasi Cobra Military and Santhali Tiger Force have been in a ceasefire with the government since 2012 and since then activists of the militant outfits are living in designated camps which are being looked after by the governments.
