The upcoming edition of the Winter Youth Olympics holds special significance for viewers and sports enthusiasts in Asia as it marks the first time this major multi-sport event is taking place on the continent. Winter Youth Olympics 2024 will be hosted by the Republic of Korea, making it the first Asian nation to organise this prestigious competition. Anticipation is rising, with nearly 1,900 young athletes from almost 80 countries set to participate in the event scheduled from January 19 (Friday) to February 1 (Thursday).
The event, scheduled to take place in the South Korean province of Gangwon, will be held in several venues previously used for the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. Notable locations include the Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre in PyeongChang and the Gangneung Olympic Park situated in the coastal cluster.
A total of seven sports and 15 disciplines will be featured, with an equal representation of men's and women's youth athletes. The list of disciplines includes alpine skiing, freestyle skiing, figure skating, speed skating, skeleton, ski jumping, freestyle snowboarding, ice hockey, biathlon, luge, bobsleigh, and curling.
The Opening Ceremony is also set to take place, where Korean culture will be celebrated through performances by artists, dancers, and singers. Spectators can enjoy performances by artists such as boy band LUN8, girl band Triple S, rappers Ash Island and Changmo, dancers Ambiguous Dance Company, and the traditional band Lennalchi.
