Suhas Yathiraj Takes Silver Medal At Paralympics 2024 After Defeat To Lucas Mazur, Repeating Tokyo Games Result

Indian para-badminton star Suhas Yathiraj lost the gold medal match to France’s Lucas Mazur at the Paralympics 2024 and won a silver medal in the Men’s Singles category.

Indian para-badminton star Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj secured a silver medal at the Paris Paralympics 2024 after losing the final against France’s Lucas Mazur in the Men’s Singles SL4 category on Monday. In a rematch of the Tokyo Paralympic final, Suhas once again faced off against Mazur, the reigning Paralympic champion, but could not avenge the Tokyo loss as he lost to Mazur in straight sets with the final scoreline reading 21-9, 21-13.

Mazur emerged victorious, repeating his Tokyo success by winning the gold medal. The match was a one-sided affair as Mazur managed to go past the top-seeded Indian World No. 1 comfortably to claim the top spot on the podium.

In the gold medal match, Mazur began the first game impeccably as he got to 10 points with Yathiraj getting only one. Mazur did not let Yathiraj to even get the whiff of the game 1 as he continued to build on his lead. Yathiraj tried coming back but by the time he had 9 points, Mazur alreadt was on game-point, eventually taking the first game 21-9.

In the second game, Yathiraj put up a much better fright but Mazur was riding on high confidence. By the time the Indian shuttler could reach five points, Mazur was already on 10 points, with most of the stadium cheering for the local shuttler. Eventually, Mazur defeated the Indian shuttler 21-13 in the second game as well winning the giold medal match 21-9, 21-13.

Suhas Defeated Compatriot Sukant Kadam To Reach Finals

Earlier in the tournament, Suhas had secured his place in the final by defeating fellow Indian Sukant Kadam in straight games, winning the semifinal with a score of 21-17, 21-12. This victory not only guaranteed India another medal but also set the stage for his triumphant showdown with Mazur.

Suhas’s silver medal takes India's medal tally at the Paris Paralympics 2024 to 12, including 2 golds, 5 silvers, and 5 bronze medals. Mazur replicated what he did in the first game, winning the match in straight sets.
