Two-time World Cup-winning skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni inaugurated the 2011 World Cup victory memorial at the Wankhede stadium on Friday (April 7). The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) built the memorial at the location where MS Dhoni’s historic 2011 World Cup winning six had landed at Wankhede Stadium stands. Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), for the first time ever, will be hosting the Cricket World Cup 2023 in its entirety.
MS Dhoni-led Indian cricket team defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets in a summit clash to attain a historic win in the 2011 World Cup final. Gautam Gambhir (97 runs) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (91 not out) were the pick of batters in this match.

Batting first, Sri Lanka scored 274/6 in their allotted 50 overs. Mahela Jayawardene (103*) scored an unbeaten ton, while skipper Kumar Sangakkara (48) played a brilliant innings to help Sri Lanka post a decent total. For India, Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan took two wickets apiece and Harbhajan Singh took one wicket.
Chasing 275, India suffered early blows in form of Virender Sehwag (0) and Sachin Tendulkar (18). After this, a solid 83-run partnership between Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli (35) kept India alive in the chase. Post Kohli's dismissal, Gambhir (97 runs off 122 balls) shared a 109-run partnership for the fourth wicket with skipper MS Dhoni. Dhoni and Yuvraj (21*) shared an unbeaten 54-run partnership for the fifth wicket, which helped India secure their first World Cup title in 28 years.
