Hockey: India Head Coach Graham Reid Resigns After World Cup

Coach Reid, who joined the national team in April 2019, was part of the team that won a historic bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, the silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

India men's hockey team head coach Graham Reid resigned from his position, Monday, a day after the conclusion of the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup 2023 in Odisha, where Germany outclassed defending champions Belgium in a penalty shoot-out to clinch the coveted title for a record third time.

Reid's support staff - Analytical Coach Greg Clarke and Scientific Advisor Mitchell David Pemberton too resigned on Monday morning. Coach Reid had joined the national team in April 2019. He led the India men's hockey team to a historic bronze medal win at the Tokyo Olympics, a silver medal finish at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Reid's term was till next year's Paris Olympics.

Talking about his stint with the Indian side since 2019, Reid said, “It is now time for me to step aside and handover the reigns to the next management. It has been an honour and privilege to work with the team and Hockey India and I have enjoyed every moment of this epic journey. I wish the team all the very best.”

Hockey India President Dr Dilip Tirkey said, “India will always have gratitude towards Graham Reid and his team of support staff who have brought good results to the country, particularly the Olympic Games. As all journeys move to different phases, it is now time for us to move on towards a new approach for our team.”

India men's hockey team ended their World Cup campaign with a 5-2 win against South Africa in classification match to finish ninth along with Argentina at the quadrennial event.

After end of group stage, the Harmanpreet Singh-led side had to defeat New Zealand to qualify for the World Cup quarterfinals in a crossover match. Eventually, the Blues lost this match in a penalty shootout.
