Hockey India CEO Elena Norman Resigns Days After Women's Team's Coach Janneke Schopman's Exit

Elena Norman's departure follows recent concerns raised by the chief coach of the Indian women's hockey team, Janneke Schopman, who asserted that she felt undervalued and disrespected by HI.

Fresh upheaval hit Hockey India (HI) on Tuesday as CEO Elena Norman rendered her resignation due to non-payment of dues for the past three months, according to sources within the national federation. Norman, who served in the position for nearly 13 years, stepped down amid the growing dissatisfaction with the work environment, as confirmed in a PTI report.

Norman's departure follows recent concerns raised by the chief coach of the Indian women's hockey team, Janneke Schopman, who asserted that she felt undervalued and disrespected by the national federation. While the official statement did not specify the reasons for Norman's resignation, an authoritative source revealed her discontent over the "non-payment of her dues for the last three months" and overall dissatisfaction with the work atmosphere, as reported by PTI

Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey, acknowledging Norman's resignation, expressed gratitude for her significant contributions over the years. Tirkey stated: "Her dedication and efforts have played a pivotal role in propelling Hockey India and Indian hockey to the commendable position they hold today. I wish her great success in all her future endeavours."

Men's, Women's Hockey Teams Achieved Their Highest-Ever World Rankings Under Norman

During her tenure, both the men's and women's teams achieved their highest-ever world rankings. The men's team secured a historic bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games, ending a 41-year medal drought, while the women finished at an unprecedented fourth place. Norman's leadership saw India host two consecutive editions of the FIH Men's World Cup (2018 and 2023), two Junior Men's World Cups (2016 and 2021), and five editions of the now-discontinued Hockey India League (HIL).

Additionally, under her guidance, Hockey India hosted international events such as the Champions Trophy, World League Finals (2015 and 2017), Olympic Qualifiers (2019 and 2024), and Hockey Pro League home games. The statement from Hockey India highlighted Norman's pivotal role in promoting women's hockey, ensuring equal facilities, and introducing cash awards for outstanding performances through the Hockey India Annual Awards.

Notably, she played a significant role in the women's team qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics, marking their participation after 36 years.
