The Manchester United manager was under huge pressure after suffering a humiliating defeat at home to Liverpool, and the Red Devils have repsonded to the loss pretty well, as they now win their second game of the Premier League 2024/25 season.

Marcus Rashford brought an end to his goal-drought, and alongside that, Matthijs De Ligt managed to score his first goal in a Manchester United shirt, as the Dutch defender looks for redemption after enduring a forgettable international break with Netherlands.

Southampton made a bright start to the fixture, as they were on the attack right from the word go. Manchester United did create some chances, but Aaron Ramsdale produced a string of excellent saves to keep the visitors at bay.

St. Mary's went berserk as Tyler Dibling was fouled inside the box by Diogo Dalot and Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot, as Southampton were awarded a penalty.

However, a horrific effort by striker Cameron Archer from 12 yards saw Andre Onana make a simple save on his right and the rebound header of the 22-year-old proved to be a tame effort, as the Manchester United keeper grabbed the ball with ease.

The fortunes of the home side took a quick turn as merely two minutes after the missed penalty, Matthijs De Ligt headed in a beautiful lofted ball from Bruno Fernandes to give Manchester United a 1-0 lead, which was followed by a beautiful goal from Marcus Rashford 6 minutes later, as the Manchester United academy product finally brought an end to his goal drought, and the visitors walked into the half-time with a two-goal lead.
