Euro 2024: Ronaldo Breaks Down In Tears After Penalty Miss As Portugal Go Past Slovenia In Shootout

Cristiano Ronaldo was reduced to tears after he missed a crucial penalty against Slovenia during a EURO 2024 match at the Frankfurt Arena in Frankfurt.

Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal progressed to the Euro 2024 quarterfinals after overcoming Slovenia in a penalty shootout on July 2 (Tuesday) after the game ended in 0-0 tie. The game took a poignant turn as an emotional moment unfolded that saw Cristiano Ronaldo in tears following a missed penalty in extra time. The Al-Nassr forward took the spot-kick near the end of the first half of extra time following a foul on Diogo Jota. Portugal Defeat Slovenia To Enter Euro 2024 Quarterfinals

Despite all the drama, the match ended on a high note for Portugal as they advanced to the European Championship quarterfinals after defeating Slovenia in the penalty shootout. During the shootout, Ronaldo redeemed himself by successfully converting Portugal’s first penalty. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Diogo Costa made history by saving all three of Slovenia’s attempts, becoming the first keeper to achieve this feat in a European Championship.

Portugal converted all four of their penalties, with Bernardo Silva securing the victory by scoring the fourth.

During extra time, Costa kept Portugal in the game with a crucial save against Slovenia's young star Benjamin Sesko. After the 21-year-old capitalized on a rare mistake by the 41-year-old Pepe and broke clear, Costa thwarted his effort by sticking out a leg, ensuring the match went to a penalty shootout.

Portugal will now face France in the quarterfinal match in Hamburg, a rematch of the 2016 final that Portugal won in Paris.
