Despite all the drama, the match ended on a high note for Portugal as they advanced to the European Championship quarterfinals after defeating Slovenia in the penalty shootout. During the shootout, Ronaldo redeemed himself by successfully converting Portugal’s first penalty. After the 21-year-old capitalized on a rare mistake by the 41-year-old Pepe and broke clear, Costa thwarted his effort by sticking out a leg, ensuring the match went to a penalty shootout.

Portugal will now face France in the quarterfinal match in Hamburg, a rematch of the 2016 final that Portugal won in Paris.
