Manchester City Take Step Closer To Historic Treble, Beat Manchester United To Claim 7th FA Cup Title

Manchester City beat Manchester United 2-1 in the FA Cup final at the Wembley Stadium in London on June 3 (Saturday).

Manchester City registered a 2-1 win over Manchester United at at the Wembley Stadium in London to secure their 7th FA Cup title on Saturday. While it was a first minute goal from Ilkay Gundogan which put City in the lead, United initially equalised in the 33rd minute with Bruno Fernandes scoring from the spot to level the scoreline. However, Gundogan's second goal turning out to be the winner and the difference between the two teams at full time with the German finding the back of the net in the 51st minute. With this win, City are now just one title away from completing a historic treble, after having already secured the Premier League title.

If City indeed manage to beat Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League final on June 10 to claim their first-ever continetal title, they shall have the distinction of being only the second team since United in 1998-99 to win the three titles (Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League) in the same season. And with the kind of form they have been in, there is no reason to suggest why they cannot.

Talking about the FA Cup final, the hero of the match was City's skipper Gundogan who was presumably playing his last game for the club in England with his contract coming an end this season. He scored the fastest goal in the history of the FA Cup final, helping City take the lead in just 12 seconds. The Reds though did have their moments in the match especially when Jack Grealish was penalised for a handball and Fernandes scored from the resulting penalty kick. However, fittingly it was the 32-year-old who slotted home the winner minutes into the second half.

"Everyone knows the FA Cup is the most beautiful domestic club competition in the world, so to win this trophy again and complete the double is amazing for us," said Gundogan after the match.

"We have a chance to do something special and win the treble and we do not want to let this opportunity pass us by," he added.

As far as United are concerned, they have themselves to blame after wasting chances to stitch a result which could be way different. Raphael Varane fired what could have been their best chance high and wide from a corner, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho also came close but were off target. Moreover, their goalkeeper David de Gea did save efforts from De Bruyne and Haaland but his attempt to deny the second goal from Gundogan wasn't quite impressive and sonething he would like to work upon.
