Cristiano Ronaldo happens to be one of the most popular footballers around the world.
While fans breaching security to meet their favourite sportstar is a common occurrence worldwide, one particular fan broke during the Euro 2024 Qualifier- Portugal vs Bosnia Bosnia and Herzegovina went a step further and lifted his idol. The incident happened at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica on Sunday (June 18, IST).
The incident happened in the second half of the match when a man managed to breach the security barriers and greeted Ronaldo. The legendary footballer also acknowledged the presence of the fan and hugged him back. Talking about the match, Portugal dominated the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina to register their third win in their three 2024 European Championship matches. Portugal did not need Ronaldo to score as a goal from Bernando Silva and a brace from Bruno Fernandes was enough for the Euro 2016 winners to complete a comprehensive win. The fixture marked Ronaldo's 199th appearance for Portugal.
As a result of the win, Portugal are now at the top of the points tally in Group J with nine points. They are two points ahead of Slovakia who beat Iceland 2-1. Notably, the tournament also marks the first assignment for new coach Roberto Martínez who took over after the departure of Fernando Santos. In the first two games, Portugal had defeated Luxembourg and Liechtenstein without conceding a goal. This essentially means Martínez tenure has started with three back-to-back wins. However, this isn't anyuthing to go by as his main test would lie in the times to come.
