The BEST FIFA Football Awards 2022 Winners: Lionel Messi Adjudged Best Men's Player, Alexia Putellas Bags Best Women's Player Prize
The BEST FIFA Awards: Messi along with Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe were revealed as the three finalists for The Best FIFA Men's Player Award before the announcement of the winner in Paris.
Paris Saint-Germain forward and Argentina captain Lionel Messi was adjudged the Best Men's Player at The Best FIFA Awards announced in Paris on Sunday night. Messi beat other finalists Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe to get the coveted prize. The 35-year-old seven-time Ballon d'Or Winner produced several memorable performances during Argentina's FIFA World Cup-winning campaign in Qatar last year.
La Albiceleste's triumph at the marquee event, the first edition of the competition in the Middle East, meant Messi was able to add the one major title missing from his trophy-laden cabinet. Messi scored seven goals in the tournament and led from the front even in the night of a dramatic finale which saw the legendary Argentina star score a brace.
Messi had bagged the Golden Ball for being the competition's best player which shows how much of an impact he had in Argentina's win not only as the goalscorer but also as someone who goal-scoring opportunities for others.
For his club too, Messi has been in a wonderful addition to the squad and has made a transition after his exit from Barcelona FC. He has contributed to several of PSG's wins and was a crucial part of the team's Ligue 1-winning campaign. It is a different story altogether that had France, who lost the summit clash to the eventual champions, managed to hold on to a win the prize perhaps would have most definitely gone to Messi's club teammate Mbaappe who scored a historic hat-trick in that epic finale.
The other big individual award was the BEST FIFA Women's Player recognition which went to Alexia Putellas, the Spainish forward. She beat England's Beth Mead and United States' Alex Morgan to get the honour. Putellas had also bagged the prize last year.
