Flat feet at root of Sri Lanka injuries: Expert
Photo: AFP New Delhi: Sri Lanka cricket board has decided to consult a podiatrist to prevent injuries to their players, more specifically to their fast bowlers, who often face lengthy span on sidelines. Sri Lanka cricket contracted Nicholas Sprenger, Australia’s Olympic silver medalist to look after the squad’s injury problems, and eventually he made some stunning revelations. After analyzing more than 25 cricketers from the national side, Sprenger detected a running theme. "Most players are flat-footed. What we need to do is to get them to wear the right shoes," Sprengers added. The squad has been kitted out with customized soles for players to use during practice session  and during international matches. The customized soles will reduce stress on the bones and improve muscle activity and reduce pain. The Sri Lankan cricket board believes usage of orthotics will prove beneficial and described it as an investment for the future. Injuries to Lasith Malinga, who remained on the sidelines for 18 months before making a comeback in the recently concluded Champions Trophy and skipper Angelo Mathews, forced the board to bring this innovation. Sri Lanka will play five one-day international matches and one Test against Zimbabwe, in the country's first tour of the island in 15 years.
