EURO 2020: Demand For Rainbow Colored Stadium In Munich After 'Anti-LGBT' Bill Passed By Hungary

The mayor of the German city of Munich has asked permission to light the Allianz Arena in rainbow colours - signifying the unity among the LGBTQ community. All this is to protest against a legislation by the Hungarian prime minister.

Munich: The Hungarian parliament passed a bill that prohibits its citizens from sharing ay kind of information promoting homosexuality or any sort of LGBTQ activity. International media is calling it a "step backwards" by Hungarian PM Viktor Orban, and his right-wing Fidesz party. There were some  “potential discriminatory incidents” at the Puskas Arena in Hungary during Euro 2020 matches.

To speak out against this, the mayor of the German city of Munich has asked permission to light the Allianz Arena in rainbow colours - signifying the unity among the LGBTQ community. Munich's Mayor Dieter Reiter said that he is going to ask for permission to light up the stadium in rainbow colours. “This is an important sign of tolerance and equality,” Reiter told news agency DPA.

The Munich City council released an application to show solidarity with the LGBTQI community. They want to protest against Hungary's 'discriminatory' laws. In fact, an online petition signed by more than 80k people is asking for this to happpen.

“It is important for the state capital Munich to set a visible sign of solidarity with the LGBTI community in Hungary, which is suffering from the current stricter homophobic and transphobic legislation of the Hungarian government,” the Munich council said in its application.

"This legislation represents a new mark in the invisibility and disenfranchisement of lesbians, gays, bisexual, transgender and intersex people (LGBTI) and adds to the systematic restriction of the rule of law and fundamental freedoms that have been practiced for years in Hungary,” the council said.

On the other hand, German goalie Manual Neuer has been wearing a rainbow colored band since the start of EURO 2020.
