'Shubman Gill's Not Ruled Out Yet': Rohit Sharma Says Ahead Of Their Opening Game Against Australia

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Gill's participation, the mood in the Indian dressing room remains upbeat.

Cricket fans across India and the world are eagerly awaiting India’s start of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. As the excitement builds for India's opening match against Australia in Chennai on Sunday, October 8, there is a cloud of concern hovering over young opener Shubman Gill.

Gill, a rising star in Indian cricket, tested positive for dengue upon his arrival in Chennai, casting doubt on his availability for the much-anticipated World Cup opener against Australia.

During a press conference, head coach Rahul Dravid mentioned that the medical team would closely monitor Shubman Gill's condition and noted that the young opener from the Gujarat Titans appeared to be improving compared to the previous days. Rohit Sharma echoed Dravid's sentiment, emphasising the team's desire to allow Gill enough time for recovery, especially considering the extended format of the tournament in which each team will participate in up to 9 matches during the league stage.

Rohit Sharma's foremost concern is Gill's well-being, and he emphasised this during a press conference. "No, it doesn't worry. I mean obviously, he is sick. I feel for him. But in terms of, you know, me being the human being first, I want him to get well, not the captain thinking, oh, I want Gill to play tomorrow. No, I want him to get well he you know he's a young guy he's got fit body so he'll recover, he'll recover quick.", Rohit Sharma said.

If Gill is unable to take the field for India’s first match of the tournament, Ishan Kishan, a versatile batsman who has previously opened for India, is being seen as a potential replacement. Kishan's impressive record and adaptability make him a viable option.

However, it's important to note that Gill's absence would be a significant loss for India. He has been in stellar form, emerging as the leading run-scorer in ODIs this year with 1230 runs at an impressive average of 72.35. Gill's contributions with the bat and his record against Australia make him a valuable asset.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Gill's participation, the mood in the Indian dressing room remains upbeat. The team is determined to make a strong impression in the home tournament and build on their recent successes, including winning the Asia Cup and a series victory against Australia.

"Yeah, the mood is pretty good as it is before the start of every big tournament. We've come into this tournament prepared really well, so quite confident about us skill-wise," Rohit added.

"And yeah, we're looking forward to the game. Yeah, everybody's fit. Gill is not 100%, but he's sick. So, there's no injury concern. Gill is not feeling well. We are monitoring him on a daily basis. So, we're going to give him every chance to recover and see how he feels. So, he's not ruled out yet," he concluded.
