BCCI confirms Saha's shoulder injury, to undergo surgery in England

The BCCI stated that he has sustained a ‘posterosuperior labral tear’ and the injury will require surgery

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed Wriddhiman Saha’s injury in a release on Saturday. The 33-year-old wicketkeeper has been ruled out of the 5-match Test series against England and is expected to remain out of action for a couple months.

The BCCI stated that Saha has sustained a ‘posterosuperior labral tear’ and the injury will require surgery. It further informed that the surgery will take place at the end of July or the 1st week of August. The labral repair surgery will be done by Dr Lennard Funk in Manchester, UK.

The entire course of treatment and consultation that was carried out at the NCA was performed in coordination with the India Team management and the GM of Operations.

The board has also released a timeline of Saha’s injury which confirms that it all started right after his return from the South African tour.

Here are the complete details:

  • January 29, 2018: Saha reported to the NCA, post the South African tour, with a complaint of a left proximal hamstring tendinopathy and right shoulder pain
  • February 2018: MRI scan was done which revealed a Labral tear. Saha consulted Dr Srikanth Narayanaswamy, Sports Physician who then advised an ultrasound-guided injection, which was duly done. Saha’s rehabilitation begins at the NCA.
  • March 19, 2018: He was discharged by the NCA, having fully recovered from his hamstring and shoulder injuries.
  • April 2018: Saha then went to play IPL with the Sunrisers Hyderabad.
  • May 7, 2018: He fell twice on his shoulder jarring the joint.
  • May 8, 2018: Saha complaint of pain and stiffness in the shoulder to his IPL physiotherapist. Under the supervision of his IPL physiotherapist, he was taken to a doctor in Delhi and a second Ultrasound-guided injection was done as per the advice of the doctor
  • He thereafter was rested for 5 IPL games while undergoing rehabilitation under the care of the franchise. Because of this injection and the subsequent rehabilitation, his right shoulder condition improved and allowed him to play without pain towards the end of the IPL.
  • May 15, 2018: Saha requested to visit the NCA head physiotherapist, Ashish Kaushik so that he could also review his right shoulder. After the assessment of his, it was concluded that it was like how it had been in late January/early February.
  • The Sunrisers Physiotherapist was informed of this who then continued with his course of rehabilitation. The Team India Physiotherapist was informed of this sequence of events.
  • May 25, 2018: Saha played the next IPL game but injured his left thumb. The x-rays confirmed that it was a fracture.
  • May 28, 2018: Accompanied by Patrick Farhat, Team India Physiotherapist, Saha visited to Dr Sudhir Warrier regarding a surgical opinion. Dr Warrier’s suggested that the thumb injury did not require surgery.
  • At this time, he complained of no shoulder pain or stiffness.
  • July 2, 2018: A further x-ray revealed that the thumb had healed.
  • July 3, 2018: Saha reported to the NCA for rehabilitation. At that time, he again reported that he was experiencing pain and restriction of movement in his right shoulder.
  • July 4, 2018: He underwent an MRI of his right shoulder which revealed that his labral tear had worsened as compared to his previous scan.
  • July 6, 2018: Saha met orthopaedic surgeon Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in Mumbai. The doctor suggested another steroid injection would assist him in recovery. If it doesn’t work, surgery would be necessary.
  • July 13, 2018: Saha declared unfit following a 5-day observation. The India team management was informed of the same.
