It's Official! Women's IPL Gets A Go Ahead From BCCI

Women's IPL will most likely be held in March before the men's IPL next year. So far it has come to the fore that five teams will participate in the first-ever season of Women's IPL.

Women's IPL 2023: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday, in its 91st Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai, approved to conduct the Women's Indian Premier League (IPL). The apex cricketing board has released an official statement to make the highly anticipated announcement. “The General Body approved to conduct the Women’s Indian Premier League,” BCCI Secretary Jay Shah was quoted as saying by BCCI in a statement, detailing major takeaways from the AGM.

As per a report in ESPNcricinfo, Women's IPL will most likely be held in March before the men's IPL next year. So far it has come to the fore that five teams will participate in the first-ever season of Women's IPL. A total of 22 league matches will be played in the tournament, in which all the teams will clash against one another twice. At the end of league stage, the team that tops the points table will qualify for the final while the second and third placed teams will lock horns in the eliminator. Each team will have a total of 18 players with maximum of six foreign players. Not more than five foreign players will be allowed to be part of any team's playing XI in a match.

"The tentative window for the women's IPL is March 2023, following the Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa from February 10 to 26 and before the start of the men's IPL, Cricbuzz reported. Other details are yet to be known. 

A look at some other key decisions made at BCCI's 91st AGM on Monday in Mumbai...

1. New office bearers of BCCI were elected. Roger Binny elected new BCCI president, Rajiv Shukla as vice-president, Jay Shah as secretary, Devjit Saika as co-secretary and Ashish Shelar as treasurer.

2. BCCI General Body approves Women's IPL.

3. Men's Future Tours Program (2023-27) and Women's Future Tours Program (2022-25) gets approval.

4. The budget for the financial year 2022-23 was passed.

5. The audited account for the financial year 2021-22 was passed.

6. MJK Majumdar was elected to the Apex Council of BCCI.

7. Arun Singh Dhumal and Avishek Dalmiya were elected for the IPL Governing Council.

8. The BCCI General Body thanked the office bearers of the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council for their services from the previous term.
