INTERNATIONAL NEWS 

  • A United Nations nuclear watchdog team set off on an urgent mission on Monday to safeguard the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia atomic power plant at the heart of fighting in Ukraine, a long-awaited trip the world hopes will help avoid a radioactive catastrophe.
  • Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe is set to cut defence and other expenditures in an attempt to win International Monetary Fund (IMF) support as he presents his first budget Tuesday since taking over as leader of the country. The interim budget for the year will be followed by a staff-level agreement on providing IMF help for Sri Lanka to tackle its worst economic crisis, according to officials, reported news agency Reuters.
  • Fighting between rival Iraqi forces raged for a second day Tuesday with rocket fire echoing from Baghdad’s Green Zone where 23 supporters of powerful Shiite leader Moqtada Sadr have been shot dead. Tensions have soared in Iraq amid a political crisis that has left the country without a new government, prime minister or president for months.
  • The IMF agreed to extend the programme by a year and increase the total funding by 720 million special drawing rights, or about $940 million as per the current exchange. The funds will be a lifeline to the South Asian country suffering from devastating floods which have inflicted damage of at least $10 billion according to the country's planning minister.

 

NATIONAL NEWS 

  • Wading into the row over now-withdrawn Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22, social activist Anna Hazare said that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has “forgotten his own ideals” after joining politics and accused him of being “drunk on power”.
  • In his first statement on the floods in Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said he was “saddened” to see the devastation and “hoped for an early restoration of normalcy”. Discussions are underway at the highest levels on the possibility of extending humanitarian assistance to Pakistan. While no decision has been taken yet, top officials in South Block are learnt to be discussing the options on the table. If cleared, it will be the first time since the BJP government came to power in 2014 that India will be extending aid to Pakistan on account of a natural disaster.
  • Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Tuesday claimed that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) found nothing in his bank locker after the probe agency checked the deposit box in connection with the alleged liquor scam. While addressing the Delhi Assembly, Sisodia said that he and his family got a written clean chit from the CBI. According to reports, a team of CBI officials arrived that the Punjab National Bank (PNB) branch in Ghaziabad's Sector in Vasundhara to search Sisodia's bank account.
  • 64 Congress leaders including former Dy CM Tara Chand resigned from the party in support of veteran leader Ghulam Nabi Azad today. After the resignation by the leaders, Azad said that all of them have backed his decision and warned Congress of facing more such setbacks.

 


ENTERTAINMENT NEWS 

  • Dahan trailer released, a mythology and paranormal concoction starring Tisca Chopra, Saurabh Shukla, Rajesh Tailang among others, Dahan will start streaming from September 16 on Disney+ Hotstar.
  • Academy Award-winning animator Ralph Eggleston breathed his last at the age of 56. As per Variety, he died on Monday after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Eggleston, art director and production designer at Pixar Animation Studios, won the animated short film Oscar for writing and directing the 2001 Pixar film 'For the Birds.' Pixar tweeted a tribute to him, saying, "Pixar and the world will be forever grateful."
  • The Supreme Court has stayed criminal proceedings for offence of cheating and criminal breach of trust against Bollywood actor Ameesha Patel in connection with summons issued by a trial court in Jharkhand.

  • Serena Williams swept into the US Open second round on Monday on an emotional night in New York in what is expected to be the 23-time Grand Slam title winner's final tournament. The 40-year-old defeated Danka Kovinic of Montenegro 6-3, 6-3 in front of more than 23,000 fans on Arthur Ashe Stadium Court. Serena Williams signalled she is not quite ready for retirement advancing to the second round of the U.S
  • ASSAM’S AMLAN Borgohain broke the national record in the men’s 100 metres when he clocked 10.25 seconds at the Inter-railway athletics championships in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh. The 24-year-old Amlan is now the country’s fastest in both the sprint events.
  • India get ready to steamroll minnows Hong Kong in their second and final group league game of the Asia Cup  on Wednesday. The Group A match won't be more than a glorified net session for Rohit Sharma's men against a team, mostly comprising Pakistani and Indian expats, who otherwise are not good enough to play first-class cricket in either of the two nations.
