  • Portugal's health minister Marta Temido resigned from her post hours after an Indian woman died while being shifted between hospitals in Lisbon. The 34-year-old pregnant Indian tourist died after suffering a cardiac arrest during an ambulance transfer from Santa Maria hospital, which had no vacancies in the neonatology service, to another hospital in the capital, news agency Reuters reported. Her baby was delivered following an emergency caesarean section and an investigation has been launched into the woman's death.
  • People from around the world pasted each other with tomatoes Wednesday as Spain’s famous “Tomatina” street tomato fight took place once again following a two-year suspension because of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The International Monetary Fund said Thursday it had reached a staff-level agreement to support bankrupt Sri Lanka with a $2.9 billion bailout spread over four years.The financial assistance from the international lender of last resort is conditional on a plan to restructure the island nation's $51 billion foreign debt after an April default.
  • Taiwan fired warning shots at a Chinese drone which buzzed an offshore islet on Tuesday shortly after President Tsai Ing-wen said she had ordered Taiwan's military to take "strong countermeasures" against what she termed Chinese provocations.
  • Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan who was booked in an anti-terror case was granted bail till September 12 on Thursday against a bond of Pakistan Rupees 1 lakh, sources told ABP News. Khan appeared before the Anti-Terror Court in Islamabad.

 

NATIONAL NEWS

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday condoled the demise of former Soviet leader Mikhail S Gorbachev, and said he was one of the leading statesmen of the 20th century who left an indelible mark on the course of history. Gorbachev died at a hospital in Moscow on Tuesday at the age of 91 after a “serious and prolonged illness”, according to the Russian media. His death prompted an outpouring of condolences and tributes from leaders across the world.
  • The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has announced a cash reward of Rs 25 lakh on underworld gangster Dawood Ibrahim and various other reward amounts for his associates. The probe is related to the ‘D’ Company — Ibrahim’s gang — for establishing a unit in India to smuggle arms, explosives, drugs, and fake Indian currency notes (FICN) and carry out terror attacks in close association with Pakistani agencies and terror outfits.
  • Sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act have been added in the case pertaining to the Class 12 student in Jharkhand who was set ablaze and succumbed to her injuries. Earlier, the deceased's age was mentioned as 19 years in her recorded statement by the police which was later corrected to 15 years. Dumka police informed about adding the sections of the POCSO act in the case, as per news agency ANI.
  • Private liquor shops shut shop Thursday as they get replaced by over 300 Delhi government vends owing to the switch over from the Excise Policy 2021-22 to the old regime.
  • External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday visited the site of the under-construction Hindu temple - the first in Abu Dhabi - and described it as "a symbol of peace, tolerance and harmony."

  • Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa is all set to be back on television this weekend. Popular celebrities have already started prepping to show off their dance skills on the stage. Filmmaker Karan Johar, Bollywood’s ‘dhak dhak girl’ Madhuri Dixit and Nora Fatehi will be the judges on the show.

  • Batting great Sachin Tendulkar will lead defending champions India Legends in the second edition of the Road Safety World Series (RSWS), the organisers announced on Thursday. The 22-day tournament starting on September 10 will be played across various venues.
  • A fine performance from the spinners and an impactful cameo from Najibullah Zadran helped Afghanistan record a seven-wicket win over Bangladesh in the Asia Cup here on Tuesday. Afghanistan's star spinners Mujeeb Ur Rahman (3/16) and Rashid Khan (3/22) ran through a reckless Bangladesh batting line-up to restrict the opposition to 127. Bangladesh stifled Afghanistan in the run chase before Najibullah's belligerent 43 not out off 17 balls, comprising six sixes, got his team over the line in 18.3 overs.
