Radhakrishnan was awarded several high awards during his life, including a knighthood in 1931, the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, in 1954. Zail Singh was the seventh President of India, serving from 1982 to 1987, and the first Sikh to hold the office. Before being the president, Singh was a politician with the Indian National Congress and had held several ministerial posts in the Union Cabinet, including that of Home Minister.
