Amrita Pritam changed the Punjabi literature scene in the 20th century with the feminist writing, her observation of the horrors of the Partition and more.

Amrita Pritam was born on August 31, 1919. She is the recipient of the 1956 Sahitya Akademi Award and her body of work comprises over 100 books of poetry, fiction, biographies, essays and Punjabi folk songs

Pritam is best known for her piognant poem on the horrors of Partition of British India in 1947. The poem titled 'Ajj Aakhaan Waris Shah Nu', an elegy to the 18th century Punjabi poet

As a novelist, Amrita is also known for her novel 'Pinjar' which was later made into the award-winning film 'Pinjar'.

Pritam's magnum opus Sunehade won her the 1956 Sahitya Akademi Award making her the first and the only woman to have been given the award for a work in Punjabi.

Amrita was also known for her personal life and association with Sahir Ludhianvi

Most of Amrita's work in the latter part of her life was influenced by Progressive Writers' Movement and the rising tide of feminism across Europe and the States.

Amrita Pritam died in her sleep on October 31, at the age of 86 in New Delhi after a long illness
