RPF Seizes Contraband Items Worth Over Rs 1.64 Cr In 3 Days, Nabs 6 Smugglers Across Northeast

The RPF and NFR officials have seized contraband items valued at over Rs 1.64 crore in Nagaland and Tripura. The seizures were made between August 23 and August 25.

Guwahati: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has seized contraband items valued at over Rs 1.64 crore and nabbed three alleged smugglers from different locations of the Northeast in three days. Personnel of the RPF nabbed the alleged smugglers and seized the contraband items in operations conducted at the Dimapur railway station in Nagaland and Agartala railway station in Tripura. The seizures were made between August 23 and August 25, 2023.

On August 25, personnel of the RPF during a routine checking at the Dimapur railway station recovered 50 plastic soap cases containing 550 grams of brown sugar valued at over Rs. 1.10 crore in the international market from an unclaimed bag.

Later, the RPF handed over the narcotic drugs to the Government Railway Police (GRP), Dimapur for disposal.

On August 24, personnel of the RPF and GRP conducted a joint operation in the Agartala to Sealdah Kanchanjunga Express at Agartala railway station and nabbed three persons and seized 788 bottles of banned cough syrup valued at Rs 1.38 lakh in the grey market from their possession.

The accused along with the seized items were handed over to the GRP, Agartala for legal action.

Moreover, during different checks and drives conducted on August 23 and August 24, personnel of the RPF seized 10,200 kilograms of smuggled areca nuts valued at Rs 51 lakhs, 936 bottles of banned cough syrup valued at Rs 1.64 lakhs, and 48 bottles of Indian-made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) valued at Rs 7,440 from different trains and railway stations of the Northeast.

On the other hand, the RPF apprehended three persons on August 23 for illegal possession of banned cough syrup. Later, the recovered item along with the accused was handed over to the concerned department for further legal action.

The RPF of the NF Railway has detected as many as 434 cases of illegal ferrying of contraband items from January to July 2023 and seized smuggled goods valued at over Rs 13.36 crore. During this period, the RPF also apprehended 250 persons for illegal carrying of contraband items.

Rail transport is often used by smugglers to smuggle various contraband items including narcotic drugs, gold, and areca nuts.

Several such seizures of contraband items have been made from different railway stations of the Northeastern region in the recent past.
