'Himanta And His Entire Family...': Rahul Gandhi Rips Into Assam CM, Continues 'Corruption' Charge

Rahul Gandhi alleged that the BJP-led Assam government had been threatening the people against joining his rally.

New Delhi: The war of words between Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took a bitter turn with the former alleging that the entire family of the chief minister is “corrupt”. Gandhi’s swipe came hours after the CM Sarma mocked him saying the Congress leader was afraid of even his son.

Addressing a gathering in Assam during the party’s ongoing Bharat Jodo Nyay yatra, Rahul Gandhi said, “The entire country and Assam know that your chief minister (CM Himanta Biswa Sarma) and his entire family are the most corrupt people.”

Earlier in the day, addressing a presser, CM Sarma had said, “Pehle toh mujhse darta tha, ab mere bacche se bhi darna shuru kar diya (earlier he was afraid of me, now he has started being afraid of my child too)."

Notably, after spending a day in Arunachal Pradesh, the Congress’s massive outreach campaign returned to Assam on Sunday.

During a rally in Lakhimpur earlier this week, Rahul Gandhi had slammed CM Sarma calling him the “most corrupt” chief minister of the country. CM Sarma hit back saying when it comes to corruption, “no one could be more corrupt than the Gandhis”.

Rahul Gandhi further alleged that the BJP-led Assam government had been threatening the people against joining his rally. However, he asserted that the party would not be cowed down by such intimidation tactics.

“We don't make long speeches as part of the Yatra. We travel every day for 7-8 hours, listen to your issues and our aim is to raise these issues. They (government) think they can suppress the people. But they are not realising that this is not Rahul Gandhi's Yatra. It is a Yatra for the voice of the people,” news agency PTI quoted Rahul Gandhi as saying.
